THE BARBIES

“THE BARBIES”
An interactive art performance work focusing on the objectification of the female form.

Furthering the concept of the female as a object for sale. Store bought children’s Barbie masks (merchandizing loop still attached) pair with sexual lingerie.
The costume worn over a full length flesh colored body suit implies nudity yet is covered head to toe.

This is a project that is still developing.

The performance debuted in Providence RI. The two Barbies handed out index cards asking if the viewer though they were pretty. The voluptuous Barbie handed out off white cards and the thin Barbie handed out white cards. The voluptuous Barbie received the majority of the positive feedback.

The second performance in Chelsea Manhattan’s art district had 1000 viewers. For this performance the Barbies did not had out cards but roamed and mingled with the crowd. The notion of interacting with a masked sexual character created high energy and fun.
THE BARBIES we were highly visible and sough after.
Both BARBIES are very popular.
Both men and woman gravitated to the BARBIE with the exaggerated breast and buttock.

Once we returned to street clothes we became invisible.

What began as a project for woman to accept the bodies they were born with has taken on a social commentary.

I have no questions or answers only observations.

Next I would love to see THE BARBIES do a speed dating.
