GREEN PAPER DRESS INSTALLATION
The dress installation series a collaborative work of art, involving three persons.
The person creating the handmade paper is the first artisan in the collaboration.
I am the second artist in the collaboration of the paper vessel. I am creating an intimate vessel that can envelope a body. The dress is adorned with a painted collage of a dancing woman that wraps around the body. Each dress is hand cut and collaged before assembly.
The person that steps into the paper dress vessel is the third and final collaborator in the work.
By stepping into the installation the third person creates a trinity of collaboration.

Confronting The Fabric of Fiber Art
Curated by Indira Cesarine, the exhibition will feature textile and fiber based artworks by 40 contemporary artists. “UNRAVELED: Confronting The Fabric of Fiber Art” explores in depth the themes and techniques of the medium through the works of female-identifying artists working with natural and synthetic fiber, fabric, and yarn. The exhibition presents figurative and abstract works that address our lived experience and history through the lens of women weaving, knotting, twining, plaiting, coiling, pleating, lashing, and interlacing. Narratives of self-identification, race, religion, gender, sexuality, our shared experience, as well as protest and the patriarchy are literally “unraveled” through embroidery, felt, woven andhooked rugs, braided and sewn hair, sewn fabrics, discarded clothing, cross-stitching, repurposed materials and more.

In February and March, Coastal Contemporary Gallery is featuring eight artists who use the figure in their artwork uniquely and for very different reasons. Though all of us are sentient beings, comprised of the same biological materials, we constantly drive to figure out our placement and purpose within the collective consciousness and a complex world that consistently points out and constructs differences socially, emotionally, economically, racially, genetically, religiously, politically….
Throughout millennia human beings have looked to the figure to build mythologies, find metaphor and express their perceptions of what realities exist internally and externally. Our bodies act as machines carrying ancient energies through life’s journeys until the next. We are each other’s surrealistic muses eternally. There is great versatility of the subject, it is a beauty and a beast, both fragile and strong. With an endless array of possibilities to convey, an artist becomes the lens and stenographer of personal and global narratives, constructing and deconstructing the anatomical form and its emotional profundities. The most simplistic gesture or abstraction of the human form is as important throughout art history as those precisely detailed accounts.
Working with and including the figure in art can be a deeply intimate experience or an act of observation from a more objective perspective. A nude may represent vulnerability, strength and sensuality, or simply be an anatomical study. Portraiture often seeks to display the essence of a personality and psychological underbelly, stamping a fixed point in time. A figure carved, molded, chiseled or built up with found object and mixed media takes up space and as we sense its physical presence, we project our own scale and dimensionality around it. Drawing from pop culture artists can assertively hit us in the gut with humor or satire, stating truths that may be covered inside media frenzy, politics and general mistruths that are designed to control society.
Wildey renders the back side of a partially clothed model and through her studies of the figure, seeks to express her views of what occurs to the female as she ages and begins to fade as an object in society. For all she has given to the world, the feminine vessel and spirit deserves to be fully seen, respected and revered. Becker explores and reveals our subconscious and the darker corners of the individual and collective that might otherwise prefer to be left alone in darkness. Walden challenges his audience to take a profound journey through the exploration of his painterly surfaces. Narrative tensions of the male figure within interior spaces are somewhat haunting and expressively cryptic. Hovermale’s visual language is poetic in nature, a memory or feeling lingers in the motion or stillness of his models that are photographed and printed on translucent papers. Scavotto pulls from many points in her personal life, reflecting upon moments where she felt uncomfortably exposed and vulnerable. Her gestural embroidery celebrates the confident sensuality of the body and the joyful intimacy shared between two people. Hoffman takes a direct and often macabre cynical approach to his presentation of the form. He gathers familiar societal phrases, words, global events and cartoon icons and channels all of these into entangled graphic, collage-like digital prints that are infused with heft and humor. Lind confronts realities while also infusing mythologies. With each work she draws upon a specific idea or emotion to present her reflective state of being and a joyful state of existence. Her sculptural process requires deep physical commitment and strength from her own body. DeSista is driven by a practice of building and tearing at the form in two and three-dimensional creations until he arrives at a place of resolve. As the owner of a salon, he spends a considerable portion of his life providing his clients with positive physical transformations that inevitably lift their spirits. It is only fitting that the figure is his focus of inspiration.

An (Anti) Gala is NAH’s take on a party in Newport in the summertime. It’s not like any other soiree you’ve been to on Bellevue Avenue. At our (Anti) Gala, you can wear a tie, or leave it at home. You can embrace your inner animal with more than a cat eye. You can get weird and wild (but you have to stay out of the fountains and respect the grounds: this is a celebration after all). Throughout the evening, you’ll move through musical interludes and art installations of all kinds; you might even be transported to another realm. You’ll dance with friends and make eyes with curious souls. When the revelry fades, you’ll be left with an unforgettable evening.

Periphery Space @ Paper Nautilus is pleased to announce Uncover: Altered Books. Using pages, the cover or an entire book 38 artists transform a used book into an art piece.
The concept for this show came from its location, the art had to be about the size of a book. What could artists make with an old, discarded book cover? How could a discarded book be re-purposed, re-contextualized, and brought back into a bookstore as something different?
The invitation went out to a large group of local artists and makers. The response was immediate and enthusiastic. Perhaps the appeal is a reflection of the connection artists have with books, with the knowledge they contain, and the role they play in our creative lives.
The artists have chosen a variety of approaches to their pieces: some are painted, cut into, sewn, added to, burned, encased in cement, frozen in the act of opening, and even a performance recorded on video– each piece is a unique discovery. It is remarkable how often each artist ended up making something that is identifiably theirs, an object that feels connected to their larger practice.

THE PAPER TRAIL
In this exhibition I am sharing the progression of this years works on paper. Last seasons collages on wood dealt with highly sensitive social issues.
As a reflex to that work I needed the freedom of the fluid forms created by working with sumi ink on luscious papers, and I began the white textured mulberry paintings. At this point the two series were over lapping.
I then fell in love with the ancient Kyesoi-shi paper. The contrast of combining the textures, paintings on black and white created a dimensional conversation for me. Both papers are made from a plant base and the natural bamboo hanging system became an integral part of these organic based works.
It is intentional that these works are not framed and under glass. The irreg- ularity of the papers and textures is obscured when put in frames with glass.
I began thinking of the body as an alternative hanging system. The 3D dress shaped that can be hung on a body became the answer. For me this shape comes full circle. Paper that was originally hand made, assembled by another artist hand and finally completed by a body that can inhabit the shape.
These wall-hanging collages are 3D and have both a front and a back. Although they are not a fashion garment they can be placed on a body. They can be hung like a scroll from bamboo poles, or they can be framed in a plexiglass enclosure to be seen from all side.

For this upcoming Luna Loba, we are invited to reflect on the moments in which we've been in danger, under attack, in grief; and how we've harnessed the power and strength to win the battle. To rise strong. The theme of this LUNA LOBA is VICTORY.
LUNA LOBA is a performance and new genre series, rituals of transformation following the full moon. This series has been running for three years, and these being our 9th and 10th performance nights.
