ARMORY ART WEEK-NYC 2018

WELL! Three days of total art immersion in NYC for the Armory week of shows.

This is the 1st week (art week) in March that has the anchor art fair called the Armory Show for which the week is named. There are dozens of satellite shows, numerous Gallery openings and open studios.  If you have the stamina you can immerse yourself in the biggest selection of art all located within a few miles of each other. And be mindful for the most part very good artwork! There is something for everyone’s taste if not everyone’s budget.

So let me share my humble take away.

Size.

Over sized work is very common, it cannot help but force you to pay attention to it. Leaving taste out of the equation I find I have become tired of the enormous creations. Emotionally they are screaming at me and lack intimacy.

So more and more I am finding myself drawn to smaller  works that ask me to get up close and personal.

Immersive work

I am always attracted to work that asks me to become personally involved. If they are successful I leave with an honest new experience added to who I am.

Video

Videos request you spend time watching and engaging in the story line.

Again if they resonate with my being they become a part of me.

Photography

Narrative photography is pretty high on my list of being an influence. The ability of the camera to capture and freeze raw emotions is very powerful. In my head I have an inventory of still photos/photo narratives that let me understand situations and emotions that are not mine but have become mine through assimilation. Photos can leave me awe struck with beauty or haunted by the desolation in a persons face..
