CONTINUUM

“So how long does it take to create a work of ART?”
As with much of my work I begin with a concept and work is created. It is often months or years later that the train of though is added to. When people ask “So how long did that take you to make” (all artist FAVORITE question) it is never an easy answer. Are you asking how much time was spent thinking about the project, what was the duration from inception to completion, or are we just being asked how long did it take to make the physical portion of the work?

Component #1

1st Generation

This piece began 36 years ago when I created eight life sized soft sculptural people. Each sculpture was fashioned after someone involved in my life. Alice, Andre’, Bertha, Nancy, Baby, Arthur,…ETC. Once they were fabricated they began a pseudo life of daily activities documented with photographs.
A super 8 movie was made in which I became one of the dolls in the form of an actor.
All that remains of the 1st generation are the family photos of the lives they led. Much like what is left of any of us after we are gone.

Component # 2

2nd Generation

Early in 2013 I created the 2nd generation of this imaginary family consisting of the couple named Silvio and Lillianna. Being from a different decade they looked different. Their hands and feet are created from immobile materials with a soft covering over a jointed limbs. They were build on a wheeled base so they could have mobility.
The couple’s set of photo documentation is more refined, they have grown up.
A video was made of the couple going on a double date to an art gallery opening. Tying the two generations together the 1st generation super 8 film was converted into video and runs as a dual screen with the 2nd generation.
Myself and a male actor played the corresponding male and female roles to the sculptures for the outing.
