MARKETING

I have been thinking a lot lately about the act of creating…of creating stuff!

We all have a lot of stuff…why create more stuff.

Well, I create stuff because it is my form of communication…but it does accumulate.

The artist can no longer (if she ever could) rely on an outside source to market her work. So the artist needs to accept the fact that she has to engage in self marketing. Marketing is a difficult job if you are in the marketing business and doubly hard if you are not. Somedays it is like have a two full time jobs, one you love and one you dislike.

So you cannot do any marketing and the stuff just keeps on accumulating.

On the up side if you are an artist doing your own marketing people tend to be a little less harsh on you for the correctness of the marketing presentation. Believe me they do notice all the spelling and grammar mistakes but more often than not they will let it slide.

This morning scrolling my social media pages I was feeling a bit overwhelmed with tying both side of being an artist together. I came across one of my artist friends whose work I only marginally care for. It was a simple painting much like the rest of her work….BUT…this time she wrote a one sentence description of what this painting was to her. She was not marketing a show or sharing accomplishments. She was sharing a part of herself. It was beautiful and she has change my view of her stuff….The stuff is art and art is the sharing of life.
